Darwin started me blogging. Charles that is, the evolution guy

“It’s not the strongest of the species that survives, nor the most intelligent, but the one most responsive to change.”

Tom's kidsBTW, survival of the fittest was not Darwin - somebody else said that.

So, I thought I was evolving very nicely, thank you. I was there at home computing’s birth. Commodore 64 – check. University classes on something called ‘computing’ – check. The PC, DOS, Windows, the Mac, Microsoft and Windows – check. The Internet – check. Been there, done that.

And then one day things just changed. My 11-year-old son and 9-year-old daughter arrived home from school and each announced that they were blogging.

Blogging, Web 2.0, social media - what did I know about that stuff? Not much, really. I was aware of it, I had even read a few blogs, but I didn’t get my hands dirty with it. I was far too busy to start following what celebrities were having for breakfast.

And so I was left behind. My kids, blogging! Instantly, I was no longer Captain Kirk, commanding the ship, but demoted to a red-shirted security guy. And we all know what happens to them when they beam down.

Change beckoned.

By happy coincidence, the Office soon after decided it was going to look at what the public sector were doing with social media. Great, sign me up, HMS Beagle had arrived to transport me on my own journey.

I’ll write posts along the way about how it’s going. Stay tuned to find out whether I regain my Kirk jersey or get vaporised in the eyes of my children...
